I recently came across this quote in one of those posts I often gloss over from a Facebook friend as I scroll through my news feed:
“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.”
It’s by Dr. Seuss. He’s not my normal business advice guru of choice. But hey – he really nailed it with this one. And it made me stop and think.
I work with a close team of highly motivated, ambitious senior leaders who never stop working their hearts out to make Assurance better. These are all people who have control of their schedule, authority to make high level decisions and together influence just about every major initiative in our company. They don’t need my permission to leave the office early. But I gave it to them anyway. A reminder, really, more than permission.
Importantly, this group also has the power to set the right example, give others a similar reminder and visibly demonstrate throughout our company what we mean by a flexible workplace and work life balance.
I hope that reminder pushed someone over the edge to leave the office early. Whether to pick up their daughter from school, surprise their nephew with an afternoon together or catch a game with their freshman daughter pitching varsity softball.
Whatever moment they captured, I’m sure it had a much better opportunity to become a memory, than whatever they would have done in the office that day.
